Emma from Australia took the Dutch Studies course 'Dutch Contemporary History':

"Dutch Contemporary History is a course that really allows you to gain an understanding of the recent past and how this has affected what we see now as Dutch society. I enrolled in the course to gain a better understanding of Dutch history, as I am a foreign student, I felt it was important to grasp an idea of the Dutch past. It is a really enjoyable and dynamic course as different elements of history; famous leaders, memorable incidents and tragic events come together in the one class.

The excursion to Westerbork was well suited to the course content as it allowed me to place a visual image to the facts that have been learnt. Westerbork provided a great chance to expand my knowledge of transit camps and the Second World War in general. It was an interesting way to see a model of the conditions prisoners experienced at the true and tragic location, within a museum setting. The simplicity of the site also allows for remembrance on a moral level.

Starting at my Professor's house to the site it was a really fun day, during which I was able to bond with my classmates, and even though we didn't bike the monumental 80km I think that too would have been an adventure."

Stina from Germany took the courses 'Lecture Series, Curious about the Dutch' and 'Dutch History':

“Its always a good choice to study in Groningen. I love the city, the people, the University and the
language. The Dutch Studies program helps you to understand the Dutch culture and their history.
After this six months I say:
Want als ik weg ben dan mis ik de straten
Vanaf de Toren tot aan Westerhaven
Ik mis de grachten, de mensen
Stadjers, studenten
Het allermooiste accent
Geen Frankrijk, laat staan Kameroen.
Doe mij maar het gras,
Het gras van het Noorderplantsoen
