Hinduism and Buddhism

ECTS: 7.5

Asia had hosted the birth and growth of a number of myths, beliefs and cultures that are now part of the religious and cultural landscape of the entire globe. These are traditions based on a concept of 'religion', and dynamics between the sacred and the secular that are embedded in the cultural and social background of the region. What are the main belief systems endogenous of Asia? How do these beliefs interact and consequently transform? What are the relations between religious traditions, practitioners and the political power? How did these beliefs expand beyond Asia and become global and glocal phenomena? This course will address those questions by focusing on two case-studies, Hinduism and Buddhism, exploring their historical origins and recent developments, emphasising the regional contexts, and discussing relationships between religion in theory and religion in practice.
