Hardware and Software

Starting with the 2024 cohort, the Faculty of Science and Engineering has implemented a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. Students are expected to bring their laptops to class whenever lectures are in BYOD mode.

Your laptop must meet the FSE minimum requirements, as specified in the menus below. If possible, we recommend choosing a device that meets the FSE recommended requirements. If you are unable to obtain a laptop that meets these requirements, please contact your academic advisor.

The University of Groningen provides various software packages for download. You can find the installation files and instructions here. If you need assistance with the installation, please contact the CIT Servicedesk.

What to do if you have a BYOD activity

If you have an activity that requires a computer, you must bring your laptop if:

  • Your teacher has instructed you to do so (e.g., via Brightspace).
  • The activity is scheduled in a room labeled "BYOD".
  • The activity is not scheduled in a computer room.

Before your first lesson, make sure you have installed all the necessary software (if applicable). Your teacher will inform you if any additional requirements apply.

FSE tips

  • A laptop sleeve or a backpack with a sturdy laptop slot will keep your device safe.
  • A well-built laptop will be more robust and last longer. These are usually the business models which are also easier to repair and to upgrade.
  • Go for a screen of at least 14 inches. Your eyes will thank you.
  • Try to meet the requirements. That way, you will be able to confidently use your laptop for a longer period.
  • Do not know where to start? Check this link for a wide range of suitable options (updated January 2025).
  • Ask the shop chat/employees for help when choosing a device that meets the requirements. Academic advisors are not well-equipped to answer technical questions.
  • Most laptop brands and vendors have dedicated student stores or student discounts. These often contain better/longer warranties and lower prices, but this is not always the case, so make sure to look around and compare!
