Student Housing
Finding housing in a new city can feel daunting, especially in a popular student city like Groningen. The good news? Groningen is one of the more affordable student cities in the Netherlands and with the right approach, most students are able to secure a place to live before their study starts.
It is important to know that the University of Groningen does not provide student housing, so you’ll need to arrange accommodation yourself. We strongly recommend starting your search early. If you’re beginning your studies in September, begin looking for a room as early as April.
You have two main options: SSH Student Housing and Private housing.
1. SSH Student Housing
SSH is a student housing organisation that offers rooms specifically for international students. Availability is limited, so be sure to apply as soon as bookings open. More informatoin can be found on the SSH Student Housing website.
2. Private Housing
You can also find housing through private channels such as:
-
Facebook groups (search for “Groningen rooms” or similar)
-
Other official housing websites
Important tips to avoid scams:
-
Only use platforms with a traceable physical address
-
Always view the room (in person or via video call)
-
Read the contract carefully before signing
-
Never pay anything without a written contract
-
Always ask for a receipt
