Masterstudent Bettina Hünteler wins NIDI-NVD Master Thesis Award
To promote the study of population and encourage young researchers in the field, the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) and the Netherlands Demographic Society (NVD) hand out the NIDI-NVD Master Thesis Award for the best master thesis in the field of demography. This year’s winner is Bettina Hünteler, who’s thesis is titled ‘Spatial immobility related to the family: Do geographic proximity to the parents and intergenerational support exchange matter for migration decisions within Germany?’.
Hünteler has recently completed Double Degree Master Demography and Social Inequality, a collaboration between the Faculty of Spatial Sciences in Groningen and the University of Cologne in Germany where students are enrolled in two related master programmes and write one joint thesis. She is currently working at the university of Cologne, where she is preparing to start a PhD project.
To qualify for the NIDI-NVD Master Thesis Award the thesis should:
- have a link with the Netherlands, either through the nationality, place of residence or university of the candidate, or through the choice of topic;
- be an original master thesis which was successfully defended at a recent date (current or previous year); a thesis may only compete once;
- be self-nominated by the student within the given deadline.
The NIDI-NVD Master Thesis Award carries a Euro 500 cash benefit and a certificate.
