Allianz European Demographer Award 2018 for Fanny Janssen

On 10 April, Professor in Demography Fanny Janssen from the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, received the prestigious 2018 Allianz European Demographer Award, which was handed out in at the Allianz Forum in Berlin.

The Allianz European Demographer Award honours outstanding research in the field of population studies on demographic change in Europe, achieved by a researcher in the early stage of their career and a researcher at a more advanced stage.

The evaluation committee, composed of highly renowned international experts in population studies, judged the many nominations they received, and selected Fanny Janssen for the experienced researcher award. The junior award was won by Kieron Barclay (Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock).

The evaluation committee honoured Janssen’s outstanding scientific excellence and the highly innovative research achievements, which are of great scientific relevance and high international visibility.

Dr. Andreas Edel, member of the jury and Executive Secretary of Population Europe, stated: "Her outstanding research record includes a number of highly influential studies on the long-term development of mortality and health patterns across Europe. This research has substantially contributed to the understanding of mortality trends and mortality differences between countries and sexes, and to come-up with better projections of future life expectancy."
