Ever heard of the student assessor? Here´s to what the role actually is and how we as students have a say in the Faculty Board or the University.

What is your role as student assessor?

As a student assessor, I am an advisory member in the Faculty Board of  FEB. This means I offer the Faculty Board advice on all student relative matters such as the quality of education, employability and internationalization and student affairs. Next, to this, I keep the Faculty Board up to date regarding the needs and wishes of FEB students. On the other hand, I also communicate and explain the decisions and strategies of the Faculty Board to different student organizations. You could say that I’m the bridge between the students and the Faculty Board. The Faculty Board exists of the Dean, Vice Dean, Managing Director, Secretary and a student member, me. We meet every Tuesday morning to discuss ongoing projects, but also new ideas which can be implemented in our faculty.

To have a good inside in the student perspective, I have close contact with different student organizations. For instance with the Faculty Council, study associations, QUEST, but also outside the faculty with the University Council and student assessors from the other faculties.

Can you tell us something about yourself and how you got into that position?

Next to my role as student assessor, I am studying Econometrics and Operations Research, in which I am in my fourth year. And I am also organizing the national Econometrics day, which is an annual career event for eight hundred Econometric students from different universities in the Netherlands. Last May, I saw the advertisement for the position of student assessor and I immediately felt interested as I was already part of the representative body in my high school. Representing the student in such a direct way during a decision making process and having the freedom to implement your own ideas, were the things that enthused me the most! Working together with so many different organizations and people is something I really like, so I applied and here I am ☺

What is particularly interesting for us as students regarding your position?

We have just sent our plans on the quality agreements (this is the money which came available to improve education at Universities due to the fact that the basic scholarship has been cancelled) to the University Council. Hopefully, they approve our plans, so we can start with implementing our ideas. Another project I am currently busy with is the sustainable FEB project where we are looking at all aspects of the faculty (education and research, facilities and associations) in order to make sure that we keep improving on sustainability. What many students do not know, is that our building already regulates warm and cold to not waste energy. We are now figuring out which programs and researches are working on the theme of sustainability and we would maybe want to integrate sustainability even more into our education and research.

Which three things in your role as student assessor do you appreciate the most?

Well, if I had to choose three things, I think it would be the fact that I see that the students voice is taken seriously, the room for my personal ideas and lastly the positive influence on me as a person: I learn a lot about the faculty, the university and the way things function here and most importantly I learn how to think in a strategic and out of the box way.
