Dr. Mirjan Petrusma - PhD 2011

I received my PhD from the University of Groningen in 2011 from the Faculty of Science and Engineering. I studied enzymes involved in bacterial steroid degradation and regulation of bacterial antibiotic synthesis. After my PhD I completed a postdoc here in Groningen and I am now currently a patent information specialist for the RUG/UMCG. As part of the Northern Knowledge IP team I give support in patenting and we manage the patents and patent applications of the RUG/UMCG.

During my PhD I was involved in discussions about the continuation of a patent application, which made me more aware of patenting and the policy of the university. The critical-thinking and problem-solving skills I developed during my PhD and postdoctoral studies, as well as my training as a molecular biologist and my background in biotechnology research are essential for my current position as a patenting information specialist.

In my work I enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team with people from different backgrounds and expertise; also the interactions with researchers on a wide range of research topics and innovative ideas. I enjoy going in-depth into scientific research and the world of patenting.

To current PhD students, I say start early to think of your career after obtaining your PhD. Take the time to talk to people both inside and outside academia. This will not only make you more aware of opportunities but will also help to build your network.
