Education Master's Master's international students Study in Groningen

Welcoming Ceremony

At the beginning of each semester the university welcomes both new international Bachelor and Master students to Groningen. Distinguished speakers from the university, the city of Groningen and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) open the official Welcoming Ceremony in a short plenary session, after which students can gather lots of useful information for a great start of their time with us.

Next ceremony and information market

We would love to welcome you to Groningen on Thursday the 2nd of September in the Martini Church. We are working on a suitable format of this event making sure we take into account all COVID-19 restrictions, so a precise time and invitation will follow over the next few months. We will communicate all updates through this webpage and through email. We will start sending out invitations mid-July onwards (based on admission status) –if you have not received an email by August 24th, contact us at so we can send you the necessary information. For the time being you will be able to find a lot of useful information already in our pre-departure guide.

Movin' to the University of Groningen

Due to the current COVID-19 situation and regulations in The Netherlands we cannot offer our Movin' to the University of Groningen welcome at Schiphol airport, unfortunately. Please check out page 21 of our Road to the UG guide for ways to make your way to Groningen or Leeuwarden. If you have questions before your departure you can of course always contact us.

Online goodie bag

We have also gathered interesting and useful information for you in an online goodie bag, which you can browse through whenever you like. The goodie bag has information on (for example) sports, student societies, insurance, and fun (off- and online) events to join!

Goodie bags are handed out to students

ESN Introduction week

The ESN introduction week is another great way to start off your time in Groningen. Get to know your way around the city, find out where the best bars and clubs are, learn about Dutch history, watch a comedy act and learn everything about the transport (even how to ride a bike!).

Public transport in the Netherlands

Public transport card with discount for international students

The University of Groningen and Student Mobility have arranged a special public transport card for international students, to make your life that much easier when you've just arrived in a new country.

In the Netherlands you need an OV-chipkaart to travel around by train, bus, metro and tram. There are two possibilities:

  • An anonymous card without any discount
  • A personal card, where you need a Dutch debit card and the buying process is written in Dutch

Both options are not ideal for international students; that is why Student Mobility created the Student Mobility/OV-chipkaart, a custom-made card for international students. Buy the basic card for €15,- and sign-up (optional) for services and discount created for international students for a small monthly fee.

Sign up now to make sure you hit the ground running when you've arrived in the Netherlands!
