At the beginning of each semester the university welcomes both new international Bachelor and Master students to Groningen. Distinguished speakers from the university, the city of Groningen and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) open the official Welcoming Ceremony in a short plenary session, after which students can gather lots of useful information for a great start of their time with us.
Information market and workshops
The information market with over 40 information booths presents all that the university and city of Groningen have to offer (in terms of, for example, sports and cultural facilities, international student associations and university facilities) and a variety of interesting workshops are organized to - for example - pick up a first few words of Dutch, to learn how to navigate Dutch traffic or how to get the cheapest, tastiest meals in town (summer ceremony only).
The Welcoming Ceremony is the perfect opportunity to meet fellow international students, and although not compulsory, attendance is strongly advised (free of charge).
The next Welcoming Ceremony will take place in the Oosterpoort on 29 August 2019. We start sending out invitations in August (based on admission status) – if you have not received an invitation by August 28, contact us at email@example.com so we can send you the necessary information.
Movin' to Groningen
If you arrive at Schiphol airport on the 26 or 27th of August come and say hello to our Movin' to Groningen team who will welcome you and help you on your way to Groningen (or Leeuwarden, if you are a CF student)!
PARTY with us
Ten live acts to enjoy, snacks, making new friends and dancing the night away - these are all guaranteed when you come to the Welcoming Festival on August 29 (sponsored by TotalBookings)! Make Dutch and international friends, vote live for the music you would like to hear and rock out to great tunes all night long.

ESN Introduction week
The ESN introduction week is another great way to start off your time in Groningen. Get to know your way around the city, find out where the best bars and clubs are, learn about Dutch history, watch a comedy act and learn everything about the transport (even how to ride a bike!).
