Postal and telephone services

At the post office you can buy stamps and you can post letters and parcels. Outside post offices and all over the city there are postboxes (red or orange) which have two slots for mail. The slot on the right (if available) is for local mail with postal codes running from 7000 to 9999, the slot on the left for all other mail, hence also for the letters you send abroad.

Telephone - Area code

When making a telephone call from outside the area in which you want to contact someone, first you should dial the area code, which in the Netherlands begins with zero (0). After dialing this code, you can dial the subscriber’s number. Please note that all Dutch telephone numbers consist of 10 digits including the area code; so for local calls you need fewer digits (not those of your own area). The area code for Groningen is 050.

Mobile phones

There are several shops for mobile phones. In the city centre you will find shops exclusively for one phone company as there are others which sell phones for a broad range of telephone companies. In choosing a company be aware that the prices for international calls differ quite a lot.

Several companies offer cheap telephone cards. The system is easy. You buy a telephone card for €5, €10, €20, or €50. Dial the number on this card and follow the instructions. Compared to normal telephone rates the cards make calling your home country a lot cheaper.
