Student resources

As a student of the University of Groningen, you can access numerous university facilities to help you progress academically. The library has peaceful study places, coffee areas to discuss group projects or take a break, and offline and online research systems to support you in your study process. The Language Centre offers different language courses; international students can take basic Dutch courses here to help them get around in the Netherlands. The University has additional study facilities outlined below:

Library Study Spaces

The UG has three library locations – the University Library (UB) in the city centre, the UB Zernike and the Central Medical Library – offering access to more than three million printed books, one million ebooks, 80,000 e-journals, and 5,000 magazines. Or, for digital access to all our publications, use SmartCat, the university’s online library catalogue.

Library staff is available to assist you in finding relevant materials and information.

There are over 2,100 study places at the UB City Centre. You can also book a studio for study sessions via the UB app.

IT/CIT

  • Online workspace
    Students of the UG receive a student number and password, with these it is possible to log in and make use of services such as the student portal (which gives an overview of all personalised study information), university email, progress and Smartcat.
  • Wireless Internet
    The university has wireless internet provided by Eduroam. In many of the buildings, students and employees of the UG and other educational institutions can access and use the wireless network Eduroam.
  • Printing Facilities
    Students can print at the university using their student number. Credit can be topped up online using iDeal, VISA, or Mastercard. If you have loaded credit on to your card, you can upload the document you want to print, go to the university printers, and using either your student card to log-in or by manually logging-in, you can access your print job.


AV Services

AV equipment is available for the purposes of university-related work ranging from teaching and research to faculty communication and PR purposes. There are laptops, camcorders, video projectors, cameras, different types of recorders, tripods and studio facilities available to staff members and students.

Ocasys: Course Catalogue

The University’s online course catalogue system is called Ocasys. This system gives an overview of all the available courses, their entry requirements, and study outcomes.

University Newspaper (UKrant.nl)

Staff and students receive weekly news updates sent to their university email from the University Newspaper (UKrant.nl). These articles are an easy way to keep up-to-date with what’s happening at our institute, as the news centres around the UG.

Language Centre

The University’s Language Centre offers language courses ranging from French and Italian to Japanese and Spanish. Internationals coming to Groningen can take Dutch language courses here.

Studium Generale Groningen

The University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences work together in the Studium Generale Groningen project. This project organises interesting lectures and debating sessions dealing with a variety of current topics.

Worship Facilities

The University of Groningen has spaces that can be used for silent reflection and it is recommended to check with your faculty student desk about the closest room for you (it may be located at another building). Also, there are several organisations in the city where you can go to practice your religion.
