As a student of the University of Groningen, you can access numerous university facilities to help you progress academically. The library has peaceful study places, coffee areas to discuss group projects or take a break, and offline and online research systems to support you in your study process. The Language Centre offers different language courses; international students can take basic Dutch courses here to help them get around in the Netherlands. The University has additional study facilities outlined below:
Library Study Spaces
As part of the library facilities, the university offers access to more than 80,000 e-journals, one million ebooks, three million printed books, and 5,000 magazines. The university houses three different libraries, the University Library (UB) in the city centre, the Zernike library, and the central medical library. Smartcat is the university’s online library catalogue which you can use to access all books, e-books, magazines, journals, DVDs etc. available through the University Library. It is possible to book a studio for study sessions or private study via the library. There are computers available at the libraries; you can use them after logging in with your student number and password. Check computer availability via the University of Groningen Library page.
Students of the UG receive a student number and password, with these it is possible to log in and make use of services such as the student portal (which gives an overview of all personalised study information), university email, progress and Smartcat.
The university has wireless internet provided by Eduroam. In many of the buildings, students and employees of the UG and other educational institutions can access and use the wireless network Eduroam.
Students can print at the university using their student number. Credit can be topped up online using iDeal, VISA, or Mastercard. If you have loaded credit on to your card, you can upload the document you want to print, go to the university printers, and using either your student card to log-in or by manually logging-in, you can access your print job.
AV equipment is available for the purposes of university-related work ranging from teaching and research to faculty communication and PR purposes. There are laptops, camcorders, video projectors, cameras, different types of recorders, tripods and studio facilities available to staff members and students.
Ocasys: Course Catalogue
The University’s online course catalogue system is called Ocasys. This system gives an overview of all the available courses, their entry requirements, and study outcomes.
University Newspaper (UK)
Staff and students receive weekly news updates sent to their university email from the University Newspaper (UK). These articles are an easy way to keep up-to-date with what’s happening at our institute, as the news centres around the UG.
The University’s Language Centre offers language courses ranging from French and Italian to Japanese and Hebrew. Internationals coming to Groningen can take Dutch language courses here.
Studium Generale Groningen
The University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences work together in the Studium Generale Groningen project. This project organises interesting lectures and debating sessions dealing with a variety of current topics.
The University of Groningen has spaces that can be used for silent reflection and it is recommended to check with your faculty student desk about the closest room for you (it may be located at another building). Also, there are several organisations in the city where you can go to practice your religion.
