Consequences insufficient bank balance

The University of Groningen sends out reminder e-mails before each payment due date so that you can make sure you have sufficient funds in your account. The following will happen in the event that your bank balance is not sufficient on a payment due date:

Blocked payment

Your bank will block the payment so that the University of Groningen cannot collect your tuition fee instalment via direct debit.

Tikkie provides an extra payment alternative

If you have a Dutch bank account and the UG knows your mobile phone number you will be sent an SMS with a payment link (Tikkie). You can use this link to pay part or all of your tuition fees. If you do so immediately, your UG account will not be blocked.

Blocked RUG account

As soon as the University of Groningen is informed by the bank that the instalment cannot be transferred, it will send you a letter telling you:

  1. that your RUG account will be locked.
This means you will no longer have access to Nestor and the e-mail facilities, the library and registration and participation in examinations. Your RUG account will be unblocked within a day of your payment being received.
  2. you can pay your tuition fees in the following ways:
  • By PIN at the Central Student Administration, open on working days from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • In cash or by PIN at the university cashier's office.
  • By bank transfer to the University of Groningen bank account: NL84ABNA0425600904.
N.B. if you use this option, your RUG account will not be unblocked until the University of Groningen has received confirmation of your payment. This can take up to ten days in extreme cases.

Debet-collection agency

If after the deadline you have still not paid, you will again receive a letter from the University of Groningen notifying you that you have been officially declared in default. You will then be given one last chance to pay before a certain date. If you do not pay by this date, the matter will be handed to a debt-collection agency, which means you will have to pay your tuition fees in one instalment, plus the costs of the debt-collection agency, which are rather high. And next year you are not allowed to pay by direct debit.

Sometimes the University of Groningen cannot debit the funds despite there being sufficient balance in your bank account. This may be for the following reasons:

  • The bank has blocked your account.
  • The name and the account number do not match.
  • The bank account number you provided is incorrect.
