Introduction for PhD supervisors

Aim:

This event is designed for current and prospective PhD supervisors at the University of Groningen. It provides an overview of how PhD programmes are organised at the university and offers practical guidance for supervising doctoral candidates.

Throughout the afternoon, participants will learn about key topics such as the structure of PhD programmes, supervision practices, available training opportunities, and institutional support services for supervisors and PhD candidates. The programme includes presentations, a panel discussion with PhD supervisors, and opportunities for questions and discussion.

The event also provides time for informal networking, allowing participants to connect with colleagues and share experiences related to PhD supervision.

Intended for:

Supervisors that are new to PhD supervision and/or new to PhD supervision at UG / UMCG

Content:

The programme consists of a panel discussion and several interactive presentations. Topics that will be addressed are:

  • Discussion on PhD supervision at the UG and UMCG
  • General rules and procedures around a PhD trajectory at the UG and UMCG, including financing of PhD trajectories
  • Training offered to PhD candidates and their supervisors
  • Extensive availability of additional PhD support
  • Usage of the system Hora Finita to monitor the progress of PhD candidates
