Whisper
Do you need to transcribe research interviews, lectures or other audio recordings? The University of Groningen offers a secure AI-powered transcription tool, running locally on the UG High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster Hábrók, allowing you to convert audio into text while keeping your data within UG infrastructure.
Local and secure
The transcription tool runs entirely within UG infrastructure. Your audio files are processed locally and are not sent to external AI providers or cloud services. This makes the service a secure alternative to many online transcription tools and suitable for processing sensitive data, provided you follow the data management safety measures.
How does it work?
Thanks to Hábrók’s computing power, users can submit their audio files, queue the transcription, and return later to collect the results. This means you can focus on other work while the system handles the heavy lifting, retrieving your transcript after a few hours or the next day.
Getting started
Getting started is simple: request an HPC account from their portal website. Once approved, follow the step-by-step Whisper guide created by the DCC, and run Whisper on Hábrók. The process runs entirely locally, with no communication to external cloud services. Users are, however, reminded to follow proper data management practices when working on Hábrók.
