Dr. Maarten Loonen

Maarten Loonen is associate professor at the Arctic Centre of this university and is responsible for the course “Climate Change: land, earth and water” at UCF and a university minor on “Arctic and Antarctic Studies”.
I am a biologist with a long history of active research in the Arctic in an international and multi-disciplinary setting. While studying the ecology and phenology of plants and animals like migratory geese and arctic terns in an area where annual temperature increase has already exceeded 6 degrees Celsius in 50 years. With this experience and scientific interaction, I became a climate change expert. Since 1990, I spend two months each year in an international scientific community on Spitsbergen as station leader of the Netherlands Arctic Station ( http://www.arcticstation.nl ), chair of the local science managers organization ( https://nyalesundresearch.no/ ) and scientific coordinator of the Dutch SEES.nl expeditions ( https://www.sees.nl ).
I am highly motivated to share my knowledge and insights with others and enjoy teaching. At CF, I found colleagues which excel in interdisciplinarity and students who aim to claim a sustainable role in society. I am honored to work with all of you.
