What drives us?
Planet earth is a very small but unique particle in our galaxy. Evolution has developed a wide variety of ecological, social, and economic systems. In recent years, due to human behaviour the balance between these systems has been lost resulting in unprecedented social and environmental crises and disruptive events.
This also applies to the production and consumption of food. The current agriculture system is economically, socially and environmentally unsustainable, in the Netherlands and worldwide. A transition to a sustainable agriculture system is urgently needed. Sustainable agriculture combines food production and consumption with sustainable nature/biodiversity and guarantees long-term healthy food security.
The Centre for Sustainable Agriculture Transition beliefs we can restore the balance of between nature, health and economic systems. Sustainable farmers and stakeholders generate new sustainable food products and services with new sustainable business models that offer solutions for the grand challenges in terms of health and biodiversity. Sustainable farmers and stakeholders transform the for-profit production and consumption of food into regenerative and sustainable healthy regions and societies. Sustainable farmers and stakeholders enable to produce and consume sustainable food for all.
The Centre wants to make the transition to sustainable agriculture systems and regenerative, healthy and circular food regions successful. This mission translates in new solutions for regional, national and international agriculture regions and communities supported by new teaching programs for students and stakeholders, new collaborative research programs for scholars and stakeholders and new governance programs for policy-makers. The Centre provides farmers, agriculture stakeholders, students, business leaders, scholars, policy-makers and citizens with all knowledge and competencies they need to make the sustainable production and consumption of food and the transition to a sustainable, circular and regenerative regions and economies successful.
Today's agriculture is reaching its limits. With this grant, we can shape regenerative agriculture in the northern Netherlands. We can now solve bottlenecks such as financing, new knowledge and new skills. We will do this together and for the farmers, the chain parties but, above all, for our northern region.
