FLARESlab: a collaboration on speech technology between Fryske Akademy en Campus Fryslân

AI and speech technology – you think this has nothing to do with you? Think again! Campus Fryslân (University of Groningen) and the Fryske Akademy would love to show you the latest developments in the field of the Frisian language and speech technology.
On Friday, 13 November, 2026 (starting at 1:30 PM), researchers from both institutions will demonstrate a number of ongoing projects, such as a synthetic Frisian voice, a Frisian-speaking robot capable of holding a conversation with you, new applications for speech and translation technology, and a new collaborative platform for innovation and research.
The Fryske Akademy and Campus Fryslân are organizing this event as part of a new collaborative initiative called FLARESlab (Frisian Language Technology Research Lab). This gathering brings together researchers, government bodies, cultural institutions, businesses, and other interested parties to discuss the future of the Frisian language in the digital age. In addition to presentations on the latest advancements in Frisian language and speech technology, the organizers look forward to exploring opportunities for future collaboration.
Everyone is welcome to attend. The presentations will be delivered in English, Dutch, and Frisian. Admission is free, and the event will conclude at 4:00 PM.
