FRIS programme for entrepreneurial students in the Northern Netherlands launched

10 March 2026

This week saw the launch of the first FRIS programme: a new multi-level programme for entrepreneurial students from the northern Netherlands. The programme brings together students from vocational, higher professional and university education to work on their entrepreneurship and contribute to the economic development of the region.

The launch of FRIS is in line with the ambition set out in the Fryslân Education Agreement, in which educational institutions and regional partners have stated that by 2030, Fryslân should be the place where students are encouraged to engage in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Collaboration between educational institutions

The programme was developed through a collaboration between four knowledge institutions: Firda, NHL Stenden, Campus Fryslân of the University of Groningen and Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences.

Within FRIS, students work on their own entrepreneurial ambitions, while at the same time being prepared for the opportunities and developments in the Northern Netherlands. Themes such as circularity, regional innovation and the role of the mienskip (community) play an important role in this.

Experts and lecturers from the institutions involved provide various sessions within the programme.

Theory and practice combined

FRIS focuses on supporting (future) resilient SME entrepreneurs. The programme therefore directly links theory to practical experience.

Entrepreneurs from the region share their experiences and insights with the participants. Entrepreneurs such as Dr Geesje Duursma, Anne Merkus and Titus Vogt contribute to the programme.

Pilot group of fifteen students

The first edition of FRIS will start with a pilot group of fifteen selected students from various study programmes and institutions. During the programme, they will work on their business ideas, networks and personal development.

The participants will present their results in mid-May.

Follow the developments

In the coming period, further work will be done on building the FRIS community and the programme for entrepreneurial students in the North.
