Abe Hendriks one of eight winners SusoGrants 2021

09 February 2022
Abe Hendriks

PhD student Abe Hendriks has won the European Award at Sustainable Society for his research on how the circular economy is imagined as a desirable future in different regions in Europe, including Fryslân. With a political perspective, he argues that these imaginations are not neutral, but that they are based on normative views. He also shows that the circular economy can mean and do different things for different regions.

With the award, Abe won 1500 euros to spend on translating the abstract results of his research into more practical views. Abe: "In my case, this mainly means that I want to start a conversation in which different parties reflect on why they really want to get started with the circular economy. This translates into a Circular Dinner in which not only the Frisian view of the circular economy is central, but where the menu is also inspired by other, external views of what the circular economy is. By doing so, we want to open the thought process with different stakeholders to let other perspectives in as well."
