16 December 2021

The University of Groningen was ranked third place in the 2021 UI GreenMetric ranking. In 2019, the UG ranked eighth place, in 2020 in joint seventh place. Of the 956 participating universities, Wageningen University & Research was ranked as being the most sustainable, just like last year. Of the universities in the Netherlands, the University of Groningen holds second place.

The UI GreenMetric ranking was set up by Universitas Indonesia to draw attention to sustainability in the university policies. The universities are ranked by comparing numerical data.

Sustainability at the UG

Sustainability is one of the key values of the University of Groningen. This means that the UG aims to integrate sustainable development into all facets of the University. Not only in teaching and research, but also in University business operations. Sustainability therefore has an important place in the Strategic Plan. All ambitions and objectives in the field of sustainability for the next five years can be found in the Roadmap Sustainability 2021-2026.

The Roadmap Sustainability was created by the Sustainability Programme and the Green Office, in collaboration with staff members, academics, students, service units and faculties.
