Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is a technology that is developed in the early ‘80s. The blood flow of almost every tissue in the human body can be measured with this technology. Laser speckle has the advantage of being a cheap, simple and fast imaging technique making it accessible for many research fields. This is a review of all current available literature using laser speckle in clinical studies.

The clinical acceptation of laser speckle lacks behind in comparison to the available (pre-)clinical studies. This might be caused by some unsolved technical difficulties such as movement artefacts and the lack of quantitative results.

“Clinical applications of laser speckle contrast imaging: a review” has been published open access in the Journal of Biomedical Optics.

More information about the topic can be found in Heemans' first article regarding this topic: Application of laser speckle contrast imaging in laparoscopic surgery (Journal of Biomedical Optics).
