Campus Fryslân hosts fourth Humanitarian Engineering workshop

08 May 2019

UG/Campus Fryslân is hosting the fourth workshop in Humanitarian Engineering as part of the UG summer school offer from May 13th to 17th in Leeuwarden. The workshop is co-organised by UG/Campus Fryslân, Texas A&M University in Qatar and Centre for Innovation/Leiden University.

During this week, the participants of the workshop will be introduced to topics in the field of humanitarian engineering by experts from academia, industry and humanitarian organisations. The workshop will focus on the use of engineering and social sciences to create, design and implement technologies that would improve the well-being of communities which are facing humanitarian challenges (natural disasters, war conflicts, migration, rapid urbanisation). The group consists of 52 international students from the University of Groningen and the Liberal Arts programme at Texas A&M University in Qatar with input from 17 experts from different organisations (Concordia University, Global Aid Pro, NYU, University of Wisconsin, among others).

The one-week programme includes various lectures and workshops. During the last two days, students travel to The Hague and are hosted by the Humanity Hub to work in teams, under expert guidance, on their own humanitarian project which will result in a humanitarian innovation that responds to a concrete need and fulfils all ethical criteria.

The fourth workshop in Humanitarian Engineering shows that Campus Fryslân has big international ambitions that contribute to finding local solutions for global challenges.
