Leeuwarden is the capital of the province of Fryslân a historic, green region in the north of the Netherlands. With around 120,000 inhabitants and about 30,000 students, Leeuwarden combines the buzz of a student city with the comfort of a compact and walkable place.

Why choose Leeuwarden as your student city?

Charming student city

With students from the wide range of knowledge institutes in Leeuwarden, you will quickly find your place and feel part of a lively student community.

More affordable than the big cities

Compared to the largest Dutch cities, housing and daily living costs are often more accessible, while you still have plenty of cafés, culture and nightlife.

Daily life as a student

Getting around & connections

Leeuwarden has a main train station with direct connections to cities like Groningen, Zwolle and Amsterdam. From the station you can walk or cycle to our campus in 5 minutes. Regional buses make it easy to explore the rest of Fryslân and the nearby Wadden Sea area.

Housing and neighbourhoods

Most students live in shared houses or student rooms in and around the city centre and the areas close to the station. Because the city is compact, you can usually reach Campus Fryslân, supermarkets and cafés within 10–15 minutes by bike. For practical tips on finding a room, visit our Finding accommodation page.

City facilities

Through Leeuwarden Student Sport and local partners, you can join a wide range of sports – from volleyball and football to yoga and strength training. With a student sports pass you can already do sports from about €95 per year, depending on the type of pass you choose.

Places to study

Of course, you will spend a lot of time in our own faculty building: our historic home in the heart of Leeuwarden. Spacious and full of cosy nooks and quiet spaces to study.

Outside Campus Fryslân, there are several favourite study spots in the city, such as:

  • dbieb, the public library with study spaces and a café.

  • Tresoar, the Frisian history and literature centre with quiet reading rooms.

  • Various cafés where students like to work on their assignments.

International students: what to expect

Leeuwarden may feel smaller than some Dutch cities, but that is exactly why many international students choose it. You will find:

  • A friendly, safe environment where people quickly recognise you.

  • English everywhere: Dutch and Frisian are the main local languages, but almost everyone speaks good English.

  • Support to help you settle in: from introduction activities and buddy projects to practical information on healthcare, registration and daily life.
