The meaning of heroes
Sailors, explorers, Indian chiefs and slaves: we know them as heroes, villains and dimwits. But why are they depicted that way? Joanne van der Woude (Rosalind Franklin Fellow) has been awarded a Vidi grant to study what the political use of heroes is and how heroes are portrayed in early American English, Spanish and Nahuatl poetry.
