Course overview

At our Faculty (and at any university in the Netherlands), Bachelors take 3 years and Masters 2. Therefore, 2nd and 3rd year students from Brazil can only opt for courses in the 2nd and 3rd year of our Bachelors. The 4th and 5th year students from Brazil may additionally choose courses at the Master level (both in the 1st and 2nd year).

Please note: you will select the course modules yourself; we do not have a pre-determined program for exchange students. We suggest a maximum of three courses per period (term). Your set of chosen courses (Learning Agreement) will be reviewed by the RUG Study Advisor who will let you know whether your study programme is accepted. Yet, your total course load ultimately be decided upon by you and your course coordinator at the home institution.

Short research projects (with duration of minimum 3 and maximum 6 months) are also available, please contact the course coordinator.

Information

The Master’s degree programme in Applied Mathematics in Groningen consists of two specializations:

  1. Systems, Control and Optimization
    Systems, Control and Optimization deals with the mathematics behind designing stable controllers for satellites, purification plants or more general technical processes.
  2. Computational Science and Numerical Mathematics
    Computational Science and Numerical Mathematics emphasis on modelling, analysis and simulation of fluid flow problems. Although the applications can be quite diverse, the basic mathematical methods are much the same. If you are capable of computing the flow of air, you are able to predict the weather, and to design cars and aeroplanes. And people who can simulate the flow of water can build ships, harbours and dikes.

Profile

You have a solid background in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics and you should preferably have finished at least two years (preferably three) of university study. At our Faculty (and in the Netherlands) , Bachelors take 3 years and Masters 2. Therefore, 2nd and 3rd year students from Brazil can only opt for courses in the 2nd and 3rd year of our Bachelors. The 4th and 5th year students from Brazil may additionally choose courses at the Master level (both in the 1st and 2nd year).
