Prof. Robert Slavin
Robert Slavin (1951) works as a professor and director at the Institute for Effective Education of the University of York (Great Britain) and as director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA). He is one of the most frequently cited authors in the field of education. Slavin is especially known for his involvement in the Success for All Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of education in such a way that all pupils benefit. He has been doing this work since 1986, when he set up a project in Baltimore to support failing schools. Success for All is a school wide programme based on empirical evidence, aimed at improving education for all children. In addition to his academic articles about education, Slavin collects inspiring examples of successful educational programmes for the website Best Evidence Encyclopaedia. He also wrote One Million Children: Success for All (2001) and the standard work Educational Psychology: Theory into Practice (10th edition 2012).
On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the University of Groningen Robert Slavin will receive an honorary doctorate for his scientific achievements on Friday 13 June.
Prof. Emmo Meijer
Emmo Meijer (1951) studied chemistry at the Free University of Amsterdam. After his promotion in 1979 he started his career at DSM, where he became President of DSM Research and the first Chief Technology Officer. In 2005 he accepted the position of senior vice- president of Unilever, where he was amongst others responsible for Global Foods R&D. In 2011 he joined FrieslandCampina as Corporate Director R&D. Meijer also works as part-time professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven.
Throughout his career R&D, Food,Chemistry, Life Sciences, Strategy and Innovation have been his major fields of work and interest. He contributed a great deal to the promotion of science, which is why the Royal Academy of Sciences awarded him the Academy Award in 2012. Since 2003 he is honorary member of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society.
Nationally and internationally Meijer fulfills a number of functions. Amongst others the chair of the successful public-private partnership TI Food & Nutrition, the chair of the TKI Agri&Food Innovation and the membership of the Advisory Council for Science and Technology Policy (AWT). Further he is chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Utrecht University and he also joined the Board of the Leuven University.
In summary Prof. Meijer personifies the close connection between universities, government and the corporate world.
Max van den Berg
Max van den Berg (1946) studied Sociology at the University of Groningen and was a city council member of this city at the age of 24 for the Dutch Labour Party. He worked as director of NOVIB, chairman of the Dutch Labour Party and member of the European Parliament for his party from 1999 till 2007. In 2007 Van den Berg was appointed as the King’s Commissioner and chairman of the council of the Province of Groningen. He is responsible for portfolios such as law and order, European matters, communication and the participation of young people in society.
