Cooperation between universities in the North and East of the Netherlands
The universities of Twente, Nijmegen, Wageningen and Groningen are working together more closely to make better use of opportunities in research, teaching and societal outreach. The partners have outlined the strategic choices that underpin this cooperation in a ‘position paper’.
Aim of the cooperation
The aim of the cooperation is to improve the national and international profile of the institutions concerned by pooling resources. At the same time the universities wish to make a greater contribution to the economies of the five provinces in the Northeastern part of the Netherlands. The core themes are sustainability, the innovative knowledge economy and creating high-quality employment opportunities.
Multidisciplinary teaching and research that responds to the ‘Grand Societal Challenges’ is a prerequisite for obtaining European funding, while the Dutch government’s ‘Top Sectors’ policy also requires that universities cooperate more.
The position paper describes which themes and knowledge areas will be focussed on in the cooperation initiatives of the four universities. The paper also describes how and where the partnership can contribute to improving the innovative capacity of the Northeastern Netherlands. Existing initiatives in the realms of ‘Technology & Health’, ‘Nanotechnology’ and ‘Sustainable Energy’ form the starting points for the cooperative projects.
