Are you a fan of the outdoors, and would you like to further explore the natural scenery of the northern Netherlands? Well, you’re in luck, because on Sunday 4 June YoungRUG is organizing its first Wadloop Event!

Wadlopen (mudflat hiking) is the act of crossing the mud-flats between the coast of Groningen and Friesland and the islands in the Waddenzee. During high tide, most of these flats will be covered by water, but during low tide, it is possible to traverse the flats with a guide and enjoy the amazing scenery. We will most likely encounter seals during our walk, not to mention all the other wildlife that is living in this rare ecosystem.

Programme

Needless to say, it will be a quite demanding activity. We will start in Lauwersoog and from there we will take a boat to the Engelsmanplaat, one of the bigger flats in the Wadden Sea. On the Engelsmanplaat we leave the boat behind, and start, accompanied by our guides, with a beautiful hike across Engelsmanplaat. After our hike, we will take the boat past the seals back to Lauwersoog. Coffee and tea will be available along the way.

Practical information

The tour will start at 2 p.m. and end roughly 4 hours later (at 6 p.m.). You will hike for approximately 3 hours. There is public transport to Lauwersoog (buses), but you can also carpool with some of the other participants. It is possible to rent mudflat hiking shoes for €9. There will be a Dutch-speaking guide present, but almost certainly also an English-speaking one.
