Purple Friday
On Friday 9 October, we celebrate Purple Friday. On this day, pupils and students wear purple to show their solidarity with LGBTQ+ people and to raise awareness of sexual and gender diversity.
Purple Friday has been organised in the Netherlands since 2010. Until 2025, it took place on the second Friday of December. Since 2026, Purple Friday has been moved to the second Friday of October. This year, the day coincides with Diversity Week, putting an additional focus on inclusion and social safety.
This attention is much needed. The latest national HBSC study by Utrecht University and the Trimbos Institute shows that positive attitudes towards homosexuality among secondary school students declined sharply between 2021 and 2025. The figures have returned to levels last seen in 2009. This highlights the importance of creating an environment where everyone can be themselves and feels welcome and respected.
We can all contribute to an inclusive university community. On 9 October, wear something purple to show your support for diversity and inclusion. The Academy Building will also be lit up in purple as a visible sign of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
