Dr M.B. McIvor, Faculty of Theology and Religious studies

Méadhbh McIvor
Méadhbh McIvor

Méadhbh McIvor is an assistant professor in Religion, Law and Human Rights and a social anthropologist. Originally from Dublin, she received her PhD from the London School of Economics in 2016 and was a Teaching Fellow in Social Anthropology at University College London. Her research focuses on law, Christianity and the politics of religious freedom.

Méadhbh (pronounced ‘Mayv’) has been teaching at the Faculty since 2017. In this relatively short time, she has made herself very popular, thanks to her ability to ‘make the strange familiar and the familiar strange’. She gets her students to ask and formulate questions and knows how to awaken ‘cross-cultural curiosity’ in her classes. She is an extremely inspiring teacher. Her course units are well structured and she draws on a creative range of examples to challenge the students and engender discussion. She creates an open atmosphere in the classroom, making it easier for students to participate and derive maximum benefit from her course units. Students love her creative and inspiring way of teaching. Méadhbh is a little nervous about how her sense of humour comes across to an international audience. ‘If a joke flops, please give me a pity laugh…’
