Lecturer symposium 'What is the role of the lecturer in subjectification?'

SCOPE (University of Groningen/UMCG) is organizing an inter-institutional symposium in collaboration with Hanze University and Utrecht University:

What is the role of the teacher in subjectification or personal development?

What does subjectification mean for the role of the instructor? Although subjectification—one of the three goal domains of education as identified by Biesta—occupies a central place in educational theory, it remains a complex concept that is difficult to operationalize. It refers to the process in which students are encouraged and challenged to relate to and act in the world as “selves.”

At the same time, teachers have many other tasks and responsibilities. They guide students in their academic and professional development and support them in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to participate responsibly in professional practice and society. How do these responsibilities relate to the space required for subjectification—and in what way does this create space for the teacher’s own subjectivity? And how does the teacher, also as a self, navigate between these different aspects of education?

During this cross-institutional symposium, SCOPE (University of Groningen/UMCG), Hanze University, and Utrecht University will bring together researchers, faculty members, educational developers, and other interested parties. From various perspectives, we will explore what subjectification demands of faculty members, what it means for their own sense of self, and what questions and gaps still exist in research and educational practice.

How does subjectification take shape in everyday educational practice? During this symposium, we will discuss these issues together and explore new perspectives for research and practice.

Format

We’ll begin with a joint presentation by Joke Fleer, who will explain the concept of subjectification. Afterward, we’ll split into three (practical) breakout sessions, each with its own focus. More information on this will follow later. We’ll conclude the day together with a presentation by Hanke Drop.

For educators (in the broadest sense of the word), educational developers, educational researchers, and anyone interested in education (and the philosophy of education).

The official language is Dutch, but English may be used as the working language if the participants request.
