Themes and projects

This web page sets out the three main themes and associated projects within the overarching 4TU+.CEE project: Personal Leadership and Professional Identity. Click on the projects under each theme to read more about them.

Theme 1: Mindset & Individual Adaptation

This theme focuses on developing the internal cognitive, ethical, and continuous habits students need to navigate evolving landscapes independently.

Personal leadership in an AI-augmented environment

Centers on cultivating ethical literacy, critical thinking, and fair use guidelines to adapt to digital transformation.

  • Objective: Inventory methods for introducing and assessing AI ethics.
  • Focus: Building ethical literacy, critical thinking, and fair use guidelines.
  • Leaders: Wout van Wezel and Xiaohua Li.

Personal leadership in continuous learning

Empowers students with the reflective learning habits and agency required for lifelong, self-regulated development.

  • Objective: Facilitate student development as independent, lifelong learners.
  • Focus: Developing study skills, content mastery, and reflective learning.
  • Leaders: Soheil Solhjoo and Jan Albert van Laar.

Entrepreneurship and leadership

Shifts student identities from analytical technical problem-solvers to flexible, uncertainty-managing value creators.

  • Objective: Structural integration of technical and entrepreneurial skill sets.
  • Focus: Transitioning technical problem solvers into adaptive value creators.
  • Leaders: Pedro de Faria, Florian Noseleit, and Arjan Frederiks.

Theme 2: Collaboration & Experiential Learning Environments

This theme explores the interpersonal dynamics and specialized physical spaces that facilitate hands-on, collaborative growth.

Personal Leadership within Teamwork

Looks closely at team roles, dynamic social contexts, and building shared resilience when leadership/followership shifts.

  • Objective: Explore the interconnectedness of leadership and teamwork roles.
  • Focus: Monitoring student team performance using speech and video tools.
  • Leaders: Thom de Vries and Paul van de Tempel.

Training Equipment & Leadership

Evaluates the collaborative and entrepreneurial benefits of hands-on, physical spaces like makerspaces, learning factories, and complex hardware.

  • Objective: Evaluate the impact of complex hardware on student collaboration.
  • Focus: Utilizing makerspaces, project-based learning, and challenge-based learning.
  • Leaders: Gunn Larsen, Mauricio Munoz-Arias, and Charissa Roossien.

Theme 3: Institutional Systems, Curriculum, & Assessment

This theme shifts the focus outward to the architectural structures, assessment protocols, and faculty capabilities needed to scale leadership education university-wide.

Learning activities for leadership and identity development

Focuses on designing a holistic campus ecosystem, developing inclusive curricula for marginalized groups, and training teachers to "teach what they preach".

  • Objective: Foster holistic leadership environments across campus.
  • Focus: Inclusive curricula, teacher growth, and support for marginalized groups.
  • Leaders: Mehran Mohebbi and Martijn van der Steen.

Assessing leadership and identity development

Investigates how to structurally measure difficult-to-quantify competencies across formal, project-based, and informal extracurricular settings.

  • Objective: Establish metrics for evaluating complex leadership competencies.
  • Focus: Assessing formal curricula, project work, and extracurricular activities.
  • Leaders: Pablo Druetta and Ferdinand van der Graaf.
