MRK Uden presents De Stad als Klooster, a major exhibition about the rich reading culture and devotion in the cities and monasteries during the late middle ages.
The exhibition is organized as a result of a large-scale study by the "Cities of Readers" project of the University of Groningen and funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). This research shows that medieval citizens were active readers and writers of religious texts. Even before the Reformation, lay people read the same spiritual writings as monks and exchanged their activities with prayer and devotion. The whole city was a monastery, as Erasmus noted.
