dr. T.J.W. (Tom) Buurke

Tom Buurke is an assistant professor at the Department of Human Movement Sciences of the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands. His research is aimed at understanding and improving human walking in clinical populations, such as stroke and Parkinson's Disease. He is specialized in the neuromechanics of human movement, in which he uses a combination of experimental studies and computational modelling. In teaching, he coordinates the undergraduate Biomechanics course and the graduate course module on motor learning in children and adults with movement disorders at the University of Groningen.

He received several grants, including a prestigious FWO Junior Postdoctoral Fellowship (2021), and was awarded the Carlo de Luca Emerging Scientist Award by the International Society of Biomechanics (2021). In 2020, he obtained his PhD degree (distinction Cum Laude), with his thesis entitled 'Adaptive Control of Dynamic Balance in Human Walking'. His thesis was awarded the Van Swinderen Prize by the Dutch Royal Society for Natural Sciences and the thesis prize by the Dutch Society for Movement Sciences.
