Sergio Rigoletto's scholarship focuses on the gender and sexual politics of film aesthetics and its relation to social change. His current research examines the contributions of contemporary filmmakers, visual artists and media activists to the emergence of a transnational queer imaginary that engages the material conditions of life in the Mediterranean region. Some recent publications include "Spectral Proximities: Speculations on the Mediterranean Beach" (Feminist Media Studies), "On Xavier Dolan's Musical Parentheses" (The New Review of Film and Television) and "Universality, Difference and Spectrality in Call Me by Your Name" (The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies). His second book projects focuses on actress Anna Magnani. Sergio Rigoletto is the author of two books: Masculinity and Italian Cinema: Sexual Politics, Social Conflict and Male Crisis in the 1970s (Edinburgh University Press: 2014) and Le norme traviate (Meltemi: 2020). He is co-editor of Popular Italian Cinema (Palgrave: 2013).

He is Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Johannesburg. Prior to his current appointment at the University of Groningen, he was Associate Professor in Cinema Studies and Italian at the University of Oregon, USA.
