S. (Stefan) Berger, Dr

Associate Professor

Stefan Berger is an Associate Professor at the Department of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at the University of Groningen. He is also associated with the University of St. Gallen and the University of Bern, where he holds lecturer positions.

His research is focused on modern organizational and team structures, leadership, and organizational change, which he usually studies by applying multilevel and/or dynamic theories and methods. Funded by a Veni Grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO), he currently leads a project on the employee experience of dynamic team membership (https://www.nwo.nl/en/researchprogrammes/nwo-talent-programme/projects-veni/veni-2022).

Stefan Berger’s research has been recognized by the academic community through awards including the Academy of Management’s Best Dissertation-Based Paper Award (OB), the Norbert-Thom Price for the Best Dissertation at Swiss Universities (HRM), or the Amicitia Price for the Best Dissertation in Economic Sciences at the University of St. Gallen. Over his career, he has received more than EUR 700,000 in competitive funding and prices from public institutions, such as the University of St. Gallen’s Basic Research Fund, the Swiss National Science Foundation, and the Dutch Research Council (NWO). His research has been published in leading academic journals including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Human Resource Management. He serves the academic community in his role as a board member of the Academy of Management’s Making-Connections-Committee (OB) and by acting as ad-hoc reviewer for journals, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and Small Group Research.

Stefan Berger’s teaching covers a broad range of topics in the areas of human resource management, organizational behavior, and research methods, and he has experience in teaching at the Bachelor, Master, and Executive levels. He experiments with a variety of teaching approaches, such as blended, case-based, or challenge-based learning, and has appeared on the Faculty of Economics and Business’s top-5 list of best-rated teachers in consecutive years.

Prior to joining the University of Groningen, Stefan Berger was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of St. Gallen’s Institute for Leadership and HRM, where he helped to build the Center for Future Leadership and Work. Stefan Berger holds a PhD in Strategy and Management from the University of St. Gallen, a MSc in Personnel Economics and Psychology from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and a BA from the Cooperative State University in Heidenheim.
