Richard Jong-A-Pin is Associate Professor at the department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance, where he currently is teaching courses in Macroeconomics, Political Economy and Statistics. In past years, he also taught courses in Public Finance, Research Skills, Empirical Macroeconomics and Econometrics. He also works for the University College Groningen, where he is teaching courses in Political Economy and Public Finance.

Besides teaching, Jong-A-Pin works as a researcher. He is research fellow of the SOM Graduate School (IEEF/RUG) and CESIfo Munich. Furthermore, he is affiliated with the Centre of Philosophy, Politics and Economics of the Faculty of Philosophy (RUG) and Centre of Expertise "In the LEAD". He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics and Business in 2008 for his dissertation titled: "Essays on Political Instability: measurement, causes, and consequences." Subsequently, he worked as a research assistant in a project for the European Investment Bank and as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the ETH Zürich.

In his research, he focuses on political economy. He has written academic articles on the political economy of fiscal policy, the relation between political instability and economic growth, terrorism, globalization, democratization and ethnic violence, and political leaders. His current work focuses also on voting behavior and the measurement of political ideology. His work is published in various top and very good peer-reviewed academic journals such as the International Economic Review, European Economic Review, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Comparative Economics, Public Choice, Economics Letters, the European Journal of Political Economy, and more. By now (March 2020), over 500 different peer-reviewed academic research articles have cited Jong-A-Pin's research.

As to professional service, Richard Jong-A-Pin has organized the Annual Meeting of the European Public Choice Society in 2015 and was a member of the board from 2010-2013. Furthermore, he was the President of the European Association of Young Economists in the period 2011-2012 (a.k.a. Spring Meeting of Young Economists) and organized the annual conference in 2011. He has reviewed research papers for about 25 different leading academic journals in the fields of political science and economics and is currently an editorial board member of the European Journal of Political Economy.

He received honors for both his research and teaching. Examples include regular appearances in the top 5 of best Faculty lecturers, a RUG fellowship for teaching and innovation, the SOM best young researcher of the year award, and a best paper award of the RATIO Institute Stockholm.
