Profile

Marcel Timmer is Professor of Growth and Development Economics at the University of Groningen and deputy-director at the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.

  • He has led a large research program titled “Modelling Global Value Chains: a new framework to study trade, jobs and income inequality in an interdependent world” funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO, VICI scheme, 2015-2020). This is building on major international research projects including the EU Growth and Productivity project (EU KLEMS, 2003-2008) and the World Input-output Database project (WIOD, 2009-2012). These projects have developed new databases, accounting frameworks and models to increase our understanding of the socio-economic consequences of increasing global integration.
  • He has been a consultant and advisor for various organisations including the OECD, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Dutch and Japanese Ministries of Economic Affairs, and Statistics Netherlands.  
  • He has extensively published in books, national and international journals, including the American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of Development Economics, Economic Policy and the Journal of Economic History.
