Prof. Marike Lancel studied Phsyiological Psychology at the University of Leiden, where she, as a student-assistent, was involved in a researchproject on the influence of shiftwork on sleep (mentorship: prof. Gerard Kerkhof). After graduating, she left for Basel, Switzerland, to do her PhD-studies on homeostatic and circadian regulation of sleep in mammals at Ciba-Geigy and the Clinical Psychology unit of the University of Basel (mentorship: prof. Rene Spiegel and prof. Alexander Borbély). After obtaining her Doctural degree, she moved to Munich, Germany, where she worked for 9,5 years at the Max-Planck Institute of Psychiatry among others as head the researchgroup Sleep Pharmacology (mentorship: prof. Florian Holsboer) and obtained her Habilitation at the faculty of Medical Psychology of the Ludwig-Maximilian University (mentorship: prof. Ernst Pöppel). From 2005 onwards she holds a position at GGZ Drenthe as senior researcher at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital. She is co-founder of the local Center of Expertise on Sleep and Psychiatry, where is still involved as senior researcher and somnologist. Since 2017 she is endowed professor Sleep and Psychopathology in the Clinical Psychology & Experimental Psychopathology group at the University of Groningen.
