After the grammarschool at Bogerman College at Sneek and Menso Alting College at Hoogeveen, I studied Classics at the University of Groningen with ancient Greek as my main subject and took my doctoral examination on 15-9-1978 (cum laude). On 6 juni 1985 I graduated at the University of Groningen (cum laude). The title of my  dissertation was   Euripides' Kresphontes and Archelaos; the supervisors were Prof. Dr.S.L.Radt (Groningen) and Prof.H.Lloyd-Jones (Oxford).

 

From 1975 - 1978 I was a  student-assistant at the department of Latin at the University of Groningen, where I worked on the Apuleius-project. From 1978 – 1979 I studied in Oxford with a grant of the Philolo­gisch Studiefonds (Utrecht) and specialized in papyrology. During the years 1980 – 1981 I worked as a           researcher paid by Z.W.O. at the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae in Hamburg and from 1981 – 1986 as a research-assistant and teacher at the department of Greek of the University of Utrecht. From 1986 – 1987 I was a postdoc researcher paid by Z.W.O. at the department of Greek of the University of Groningen and from 1988 – 1991 I worked there as a lecturer. Since 1991 I am professor of Ancient Greek Language and Literature at the department of Greek and Latin of the University of Groningen. Since 2005 I am a member of the Dutch Royal Academy (KNAW).

 

During the last 15 years I did a number of administrative jobs, like: member of the board of the research institute COMERS at the University of Groningen (1991-1998); member and vice-chairman of the research committee of the Faculty of Arts (1991-1994); organiser of the biennial international Groningen Workshops on Hellenistic Poetry (since 1992); vice-chairman of the Stichting voor LMT of N.W.O. (1994-1999); member of the board of the research school OIKOS since 1996 and chairman since 2006; member and chairman of the teaching committee of OIKOS (1996-2006); member of the Gebiedsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen of N.W.O. (2001-2007); member of the redaction of Mnemosyne (since 1999); director of studies of the  researchmaster Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies (2003-2006).
