M.A. (Maruf) Dhali, Dr

Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence

Maruf A. Dhali is an Assistant Professor in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence at the Bernoulli Institute. He also serves as an Assistant Professor (AI) at the Qumran Institute, part of the Faculty of Religion, Society, and Culture. He earned his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence through a multidisciplinary ERC project on the Dead Sea Scrolls. In 2021, he became a Lecturer in AI.

He received his M.Sc. distinction in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Robotics from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh in 2015. He also studied at the University of Burgundy in France, the University of Girona in Spain, and the University of Edinburgh in the UK.

His research interests encompass historical document analysis, computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition. Dhali has been featured in numerous news outlets for his work, including BBC News, ABC Australia, The Independent, Live Science, Euro News, and Ukrant, among others.

He has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer at several symposiums at universities worldwide, including the University of Basel (Switzerland), NTNU (Norway), KU Leuven (Belgium), the University of Halle (Germany), Oriel College (UK), and the University of Bergen (Norway). Furthermore, he was one of the Knapp Lecture scholars at the University of Oxford in 2025. Currently, he is involved in the NWO HAICu project (2024-2030), which focuses on Dutch cultural heritage data.
