dr. J.F.M. (Job) van Boven

Associate Professor

My multidisciplinary research team of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, sociologists, health technologists and health economists aims to optimize real-world drug outcomes and help people and society making the most out of medicines. I have particular interest in personalized and digital medication adherence optimization of drugs used to treat respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD, TB, CF, lung transplantation and lung cancer).

Research themes include:

(1) Identification of patient groups that could have clinical and/or economic benefit from optimization of adherence

(2) Development, validation and testing of innovative drug-device combinations such as digital inhalers and spacers, electronic pill bottles, injectables and smart blisters that monitor adherence

(3) Assessment of the (cost)effectiveness of (personalized) medication adherence enhancing tools, interventions and strategies using clinical trials.

Current projects:

  • MAECON: Medication Adherence Expertise Center Of the northern Netherlands (Founding Director)
  • ENABLE: Chair of the European Network to Advance Best Practices & Technology on Medication Adherence (ENABLE) - COST Action Network of 40 countries (>200 members) to set up medication adherence expertise centers, review novel technologies, organize training schools, short-term fellowships & conferences (Action Chair; STSM awardees: Katerina Mantila, BPharm and Gaye Hafez, PharmD; funding: European Commission)
  • ACCEPTANCE: Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a smart inhaler self-management program to enhance medication adherence in patients with asthma (PhD student: Susanne van de Hei, MD; funding: AstraZeneca)
  • On TRACk: Randomised trial of intervention on incorporating TRaining, prepAration and Counseling to improve inhaler technique and medication adherence in patients with asthma and/or COPD (PhD student: Roland te Paske, MSc; funding: ZonMw)
  • TAVI: Optimising tacrolimus therapy in patients with a lung transplantation by development of electronic drug adherence monitoring tools and assessment of long-term drug exposure in human scalp hair (PhD student: Tanja Zijp, PharmD; funding: Chiesi)
  • OUTER SPACE-2: Multi-center clinical trial to understand medication adherence and treatment response to biologics in patients with severe asthma using a digital spacer (PhD student: Amber Eikholt, MSc; funding: Trudell Medical)
  • Economic evaluations of novel hospital dispensed drugs for lung cancer and ILD (PhD student: Lotte Westerink, PharmD; funding: multisource)
  • TAI Toolkit & shared decision making: The impact of shared decision making on asthma/COPD medication adherence and the development of a toolbox with evidence based, personalized adherence interventions following specific responses on the Test of Adherence to Inhalers (TAI) (PhD student: Maria Achterbosch, MSc, RN; funding: Chiesi)
  • Stronger together: Development of a multidisciplinary patient journey for patients with lung cancer (Project coordinator: Annemieke Visser, PhD; funding: ZonMW)
  • AURORA: Adherence and digital inhaler Utilization in a Registry to assess Outcomes in Real-world patients with Asthma (Researcher: Mechteld Wiertz, MD; funding: Novartis)
  • CF Adherence: Enhancing medication adherence to oral cystic fibrosis medication (PhD student: Carina Hansen, PharmD)

Recently completed projects

  • FRESH AIR: Horizon 2020 project focusing on the prevalence, burden and respiratory drug adherence in patients with chronic lung diseases in low and middle income countries Uganda, Kyrgyz Republic, Vietnam and Greece and the implementation of effective interventions (PhD student: Aizhamal Tabyshova, MD; funding: European Commission)
