My background is in fundamental and applied mathematics with emphasis on system dynamics and statistics. In 1981 I graduated at the Groningen University. In 1985 I gained my Ph.D. from Eindhoven University of Technology, subject of the dissertation was manpower planning in multi-national organizations. From 1985-2009 I was assistant professor at the department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences of Eindhoven University of Technology, working in the fields of Quality Management (1985-1995), Healthcare Management (1995-1999) and New Product Development & Entrepreneurship (1999-2009). Since 2010 I work as an associate professor of Innovation Management at the Groningen University.

In 2001 I was visiting scholar at the University of Washington in Seattle under supervision of professor Michael Song. Together we developed research programs on knowledge processes in New Product Development, cognitive styles and cognitive biases in risk taking and risk perception of high-technology entrepreneurs, and big data analytics and big data-driven knowledge processes.

Our research has been published in the Journal of Product Innovation Management, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice and the Journal of Business Venturing.

Together with my colleagues in Groningen I am now working on topics like social networks in R&D alliances, cross-functionality in New Product Development teams, flexibility of New Product Development projects, and New Product Portfolio Management.

To date, I have gained a lot of experience in the development, coordination and teaching of courses in the fields of industrial engineering and business administration, including Bachelor thesis, Business Research Methods, Organizing Innovation, Management of Product Innovation, New Product Development, Innovation Management, Knowledge Management, Quality Management, Healthcare Management and Industrial Engineering. I prefer to teach in somewhat smaller groups of about 20-30 people. I think I can best motivate students in such small groups to get an in-depth understanding in a particular field.  To date, I supervised about 450 students towards their final thesis.

Most experience in management has been gained in the past at Eindhoven University of Technology, including teaching management (e.g. teaching committee, bachelor committee, new bachelor program), research management (e.g., research committee), and general management (e.g., board of the capacity group), as well as in the organization of workshops and conferences of scientists and professionals.
