 RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Working with researchers to produce an online research pack for members of the UN Human Rights committee informing the work of the UN Human Rights Committee in drafting General Comment 37 on the right of peaceful assembly (Article 21 ICCPR) December 2019.

My two masters and my PhD projects are based in socio-legal research, the way in which people interact within the broadcast regulations. They all involved qualitative empirical research with senior practitioners, writers, journalists, and comedians.

PhD Thesis: Broadcast Regulation and Satire: Making a Mockery of Democracy?

MRes Dissertation: Do media practitioners believe that regulatory requirements of due impartiality and accuracy are necessary and proportionate?  A Grounded Theory Study.

LLM Dissertation: Do The Ofcom Broadcasting Code and Broadcasters’ Editorial Policy unnecessarily and disproportionately interfere with broadcast writers’ freedom of expression, creating a chilling effect on challenging and innovative comedy programming?

METHODOLOGY AND RESEARCH INTERESTS:

I enjoy working with people, seeing the law in action and how ‘lay-people’ interpret and implement the law around them.   My research has been guided in part by the master’s degree in research in Social Sciences, based in the School of Psychology.  I was drawn to the qualitative modules and research methods, conducting face to face interviews, recording, transcribing, and analysing data.

Whilst I was at the BBC, as well as fulfilling my role as an editorial advisor, I researched the reflections and interpretation of older teenagers on music videos containing offensive language, violence and sexual imagery.
