G.W.M. (Gijs) Altena, MA

Gijs Altena (Nijmegen, 1995) has been a PhD-candidate at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen and the Fakultät IV of the Carl von Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg since the beginning of 2022.

Between 2013 and 2017, he studied European Languages and Cultures at the University of Groningen, specializing in German literature. During this time, he spent a semester at the Deutsches Seminar of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Between 2017 and 2020, he did the Research Master Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Groningen, as part of which he spent one semester at the Universität Wien. He graduated cum laude.

His current research focusses on the history of the Dutch lanugage in the German region Ostfriesland. Speculative literature and the Interwar Periode in Dutch and German literature are also among his research interests.
