G. (Giuseppe) Paternicò

SHORT BIO

Born in Augusta (Syracuse), Sicily, in August 1986, he enrolled at the University of Catania after completing his classical high school education. There, in 2019, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Letters, defending a historical-archival thesis on the origins of Adventism in Piazza Armerina (Enna) during the late 1930s. After moving to the Veneto region with his wife, he obtained a Master’s degree in Historical Sciences from the University of Padua in 2024; his research thesis focused on the praedicatio crucis in the Pisan region during the 13th century, a project that launched a fruitful academic career in the field of Medieval Sermon Studies. Since 2021, he has participated as a scholar and speaker in major international medieval studies conferences and symposia across Europe and the United States, and has been awarded numerous regional, national, and international grants by various Italian and European academic institutions. As of November 2024, he is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society at the University of Groningen (RUG) in the Netherlands, pursuing a joint doctorate with the Doctoral School in Historical, Geographical, and Anthropological Studies (GESTA) at the University of Padua, where he has also held a visiting PhD position since April 2025. He is a member of the International Medieval Sermon Studies Society (IMSSS) and EPISCOPUS (the Society for the Study of Bishops and Secular Clergy in the Middle Ages). Additionally, as a PhD candidate in the Department of Christianity and History of Ideas at RUG, he is a junior member of the Netherlands School of Advanced Studies for Theology and Religion. A cultural professional recognized for organizing thematic seminar series, interactive reading workshops, inclusive history education, cultural heritage promotion initiatives, art, book, and photography exhibitions, and performance-based theater projects for teenagers, he has also been a qualified senior-level (Tier I) Literature teacher since September 2025, actively teaching in the province of Treviso.
