Expertise

Pediatric Pulmonology, Genetics and Environmental factors in asthma and atopy, functional genetics

Gerard Koppelman is a clinician-scientist whose goal is to improve early diagnosis and prevention of asthma, and to optimize treatment of asthma in childhood. As a pediatric pulmonologist, he focuses on children with severe chronic lung disease. In his research, Koppelman investigates diagnostic DNA tests for asthma and early biomarkers of disease. Major accomplishments include the identification of novel genes for asthma, eczema and hay fever, as well as epigenetic signatures in childhood asthma. Koppelman studies the function of asthma genes in cells and animal models, and develops patient-based models to better understand asthma inception in childhood. He collaborates closely with patients in his research, and initiated a mini medical school to inform the public on progress in research and patient care. He is the co-founder and chair of the exquAIro foundation (www.exquairo.com), aimed at improving health trough artificial intelligence.
