Stimulation of Daily physical Activity (SoDA) in patients treated for cancer

Background: Physical activity is beneficial for the entire population; even small increases in physical activity can lead to marked health benefits. Unfortunately, the majority of cancer survivors do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity. Lack of time and accessibility of facilities, poor health, treatment-related side effects and complications such as pain and fatigue are reported as barriers to be physically active. Successful interventions to improve physical activity are adapted to the situation of the patient, are close to the patient's home, and increase exercise motivation by feedback and coaching.

Aim: In this project we will implement a physical activity coaching protocol in primary care practices among patients who have been treated for cancer to sustainably increase their daily physical activity. This activity program is adapted to patients’ personalized goals, can be performed at home and will be guided by trained practice nurses. Our first aim is to evaluate the feasibility of this protocol among general practicioners, practice nurses and patients. Our second aim is to evaluates changes in symptoms of fatigue, depression and anxiety throughout the activity program
