Esther Hartman received a teaching qualification for higher education (VU University, Amsterdam), an MSc in Human Movement Sciences (Univeristy of Groningen), and a PhD (Wageningen University). From 2003 – 2015 she was assistant professor and since 2015 she is associate professor at the department of Human Movement Sciences (HMS), Groningen. She is chair of the Program Committee. As Principal Investigator she is affiliated with the research school Share Smart Movements, fellow of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health and member of the Health Council (expert group ‘physical activity’. She actively participates in committees aimed at improving lifestyle and health in children and youth within the Northern region. In 2018 she finished the Senior Teaching Qualification in which she developed and implemented the learning line 'professional and personal development' in order to improve (awareness of) employability among students. She supervises bachelor and master students during their graduation projects, and she supervises PhD students. She is currently involved in teaching and coordination of two courses “Development of Movement Interventions” and “Child Development in Sports and Exercise” that strongly appeal to learning academic skills have a strong connection with her research. She studies determinants that underlie physical activity, sedentary behavior, and health indicators in typically developing as well as in children and adolescents with disorders. By studying implementation and effectiveness of targeted physical activity interventions, she contributes to child development and health. She distinguishes three research lines: ‘motor development’, ‘physical activity and cognition’ and ‘physical activity and health’. She was project manager of large-scale intervention studies, conducted by multidisciplinary consortia. One of these studies – Fit and Vaardig op School – has been awarded by the public jury and scientific jury of NWO (NRO).
